Judgement Day
(©2010 Steve Connelly)
You know I really don’t mind waiting,
you know I don't mind at all—
it’s got to happen sooner or later,
got to happen somewhere in the world.
Some say it’s been a long time comin’
some say it hits you by surprise,
the train is runnin’ right on schedule,
Heaven knows when it will arrive.
“Hey there, people get ready,”
the conductor screams.
This is the real thing, we’re gonna get our way,
this is the big “get even” — this is the Judgement Day.
There’s more tension than a Hitchcock movie,
it’s later than the late, late show.
You aim and shoot it like the instant cameras,
you push a button and the picture grows.
It’s almost like guerilla theatre,
stranger than off-Broadway,
it’s looking like a big production,
it’s something like a passion play.
This ain’t the dress rehearsal,
this ain’t the one-night stand.
This is the real thing, we’re gonna get our way,
this is the big “get even” — this is the Judgement Day.
There’s color photos in the morning paper,
there’s a notice in the young men’s mail,
they got it live on the network broadcast,
we’re all watching as the system fails.
Accusations in the halls of justice,
confusion in the conference rooms,
indecision in an oval office
the last sound you hear goes, “…”
From the halls of Montezuma
to the shores of Tripoli
This is the real thing, we’re gonna get our way,
this is the big “get even” — this is the Judgement Day.
