It Takes All Kinds
(©2010 Steve Connelly)

There’s a man down in India pulling flowers out of air
and a lady in Spain with flowers in her hair
and a little boy in Baltimore who sees his daddy’s gun
and asks mommy, “What does it mean to be an assassin?”

There’s a chemist out in East L.A. making vats of ecstasy,
a doctor missing in Brazil who came from Germany.
There’s scientists in Argentina mixing up the genes—
something there is going on, but I don’t know what this means.

There’s a preacher down in Florida saying, “No one goes to Hell,”
a survivalist in Idaho who says, “We might as well.”
He thinks the black men in Atlanta, they now control the town,
they love the Jews in Washington, his country’s going down.

And there’s a terrorist in Lebanon who knows just what he wants
and a diplomat in Switzerland who gives him no response.
There’s a businessman from Japan whose suits don’t seem to fit,
a snowman up in Katmandu who transcends all of this,
little girls in Ethiopia wearing “We Are The World” t-shirts
saying, “You cannot live by bread alone, it will not stop your thirst.”

And a man’s down in India pulling flowers out of air,
and a lady in Spain with flowers in her hair.
A little man in New York City, his fingers on a gun,
saying, “Voices made me do it, and you know
I love John…and Yoko (Ono).”
And it takes all kinds.
And it takes all kinds.
And it takes all kinds.
And it takes all kinds.
